3DEXPERIENCE Roles Explained: What Are They in SOLIDWORKS Cloud Services?

Table of Contents

Cloud Services for SOLIDWORKS comes with every new SOLIDWORKS CAD license, offering a cloud-based system that enhances product development through collaboration and data protection.

Here are the top three benefits of Cloud Services for SOLIDWORKS:

  • Share & Markup: Enables easy file-sharing and design collaboration, even with people outside your organization.
  • Store & Revise: Gives you secure data storage and management, facilitating global collaboration and version control with integrated tools, reducing errors in design projects.
  • Control & Manage: Provides advanced data management for larger teams, organizing tasks and streamlining changes, essential as projects scale.

What Are 3DEXPERIENCE Roles and How Do They Work?

3DEXPERIENCE roles offer tools and applications tailored to the unique requirements of specific users and job functions.

Each role provides access to a suite of integrated applications designed to support specific tasks or processes, so when a designer or engineer logs in, they only see applications suited for their needs.

Basically, roles in 3DEXPERIENCE allow you to select a set of apps and tools that might be useful for a particular job function. Your administrator can also create custom roles, based on your unique business needs. You may have multiple roles. Itโ€™s fairly easy to install these SOLIDWORKS Cloud Services.

Top 3 Roles and Apps Included with Cloud Services for SOLIDWORKS

The list of roles available on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform is extensive. For this article, weโ€™ll focus on what apps are included by default in SOLIDWORKS Cloud Services.

By default, you get access to these roles:

  1. 3DSwymer
  2. Collaborative Designer for SOLIDWORKS
  3. Collaborative Industry Innovator

3DSwymer Role

This role is necessary for all users to log onto the platform. Youโ€™ll receive a series of apps that streamline communication and initiate efficient collaboration with others. This base role links all users, enabling them to work together, experiment, and produce as a team.

3DSwymer apps youโ€™ll get access to include:

  • 3DSwym: Internal and external social communities. This can be used to create groups for specific topics and communicate with other users in the 3DEXPERIENCE community.
  • 3DDashboard: Enables the grouping and organizing of favorite apps on a graphical panel.
  • 3DDrive: Easy way to upload and send any file, similar to Google Drive and Dropbox.
  • 3DPlay: This browser-based player can display both 2D/3D CAD and documents.
  • 3DSketch: Intended solely for use with 3DSwym communities and allows quick digital prototype napkin sketching in 3D.
  • 3DWhiteboard: Intended solely for use with 3DSwym communities and allows for 2D freehand sketching and text, like a digital whiteboard.
  • 3DStory: Like PowerPoint and creates slides for presentations.

Collaborative Designer for SOLIDWORKS Role

The Collaborative Designer for SOLIDWORKS role links SOLIDWORKS CAD to the 3DEXPERIENCE platform, allowing real-time data access to anyone who needs it. This connection to the cloud allows designers to use SOLIDWORKS CAD while collaborating in real time.

The data is available anytime, on any internet-connected device so you can manage your CAD data and designs with a cloud-based, best-in-class secure solution that enables version control.

This role includes access to these capabilities:

  • CAD Data Processor Monitoring
  • Derived Format Converter
  • Design with SOLIDWORKS
  • Inspect with SOLIDWORKS Inspection
  • Render with SOLIDWORKS Visualize

Collaborative Industry Innovator Role

The Collaborative Industry Innovator role gives you the essential tools and apps for managing and collaborating on any design or document.

This is done on the cloud and within a single, convenient location through the 3DEXPERIENCE platform. Product data and lifecycle management tools that can save tons of time, and the awesome thing is, itโ€™s all browser based.

The Collaborative Industry Innovator role includes access to a number of apps:

  • 3DMarkup: Very similar to 3DPlay with the added benefit of being able to add annotations, measurements, arrows, and circles. Change actions can also be started from annotations produced in 3DMarkup.
  • 3DSpace: This creates permission-controlled spaces for files to be stored and accessed.
  • Bookmark Editor: This is like a windows folder structure and can contain links to the files stored in 3DSpace.
  • Change Execution: Creates Change Requests and Change Actions. Change Requests are potential changes and Change Actions are implemented changes.
  • Collaborative Lifecycle: Manage revisions and maturity states, also delete files, change ownership and collaborative space.
  • Issue Management: Views all issues and lists their maturity state, priority, if approvals are required, who is assigned, and who owns it.
  • Route Management: Develop and process routes to manage changes and approval(s).
