SOLIDWORKS FAQS

What is SOLIDWORKS used for?

The SOLIDWORKS software is a mechanical design automation application that lets designers quickly sketch out ideas, experiment with features and dimensions, and produce models and detailed drawings.

SOLIDWORKS uses a 3D design approach. As you design a part, from the initial sketch to the final result, you create a 3D model. From this model, you can create 2D drawings or mate components consisting of parts or subassemblies to create 3D assemblies. You can also create 2D drawings of 3D assemblies. When designing a model using SOLIDWORKS, you can visualize it in three dimensions, the way the model exists once it is manufactured.

What is SOLIDWORKS?

SOLIDWORKS is a solid 3D modeling computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided engineering (CAE) computer program that runs primarily on Microsoft Windows. While it is possible to run SOLIDWORKS on a Mac or MacOS, it is not supported by SOLIDWORKS. SOLIDWORKS is owned by Dassault Systèmes.

How much does SOLIDWORKS cost?

The basic SOLIDWORKS price has not changed since it was first released in 1996. One license of SOLIDWORKS Standard is $3,995. The annual subscription service, which covers technical support, upgrades and much more for one year, is $1,295.
