FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the difference between the HandySCAN Black Series and the Silver Series?
The Black Series has a number of differences that effect accuracy and resolution, but the biggest difference is that the Black Series uses higher frequency blue lasers, which are able to capture challenging surfaces like chrome and bright aluminum. The red lasers in the Silver Series are more affordable and work fine on moderately shiny surfaces like unpolished steel, but are not able to scan chrome and other highly reflective surfaces.
What the difference between the HandySCAN Black and the Black Elite?
The Black Elite is more accurate and higher resolution (higher detail). It has more laser crosshairs than the Black, allowing it to scan faster, and it also has a single line laser mode which allows it to scan deeper into pockets, cylinders, and other recessed areas.
How does the HandySCAN 3D work?
The HandySCAN uses laser triangulation acquisition combined with target tracking to capture 3D scan data.
Can a HandySCAN scanner capture color?
It does not capture color. For full color scanning options, consider Creaform’s Go!SCAN 3D system, or one of Artec’s various color systems.
Do target stickers have to be applied to the object itself?
No. If the object is fairly small, having targets on the table or other background will allow it to scan. Even on large objects, targets can be placed in front of a surface instead of actually on it. For instance, targets can be placed on a yardstick leaning against the object or fixture in front of it. Reusable magnetic targets are also available. For solutions that do not require targets, consider a scanner with a hybrid tracking system like the Go!SCAN, or one of Artec’s various color systems.
Can I scan shiny objects with the HandySCAN?
Yes. The red lasers of the Silver Series scanners work well for moderately shiny objects and the blue lasers used by the Black Series can capture even the shiniest surfaces, including polished chrome.
