PROTOTYPING FOR BMW WITH SIMULIA

How the automaker saved time and money developing sophisticated simulations for optimal vehicle performance.

CHALLENGE

The standards for auto manufacturers are always changing. With a constant demand for more mileage, better materials and higher crash test ratings, all of these factors affect their bottom line.

SOLUTION

To meet these standards, BMW Group’s R&D team worked with SIMULIA to develop a program, based on Abaqus FEA, that helped them meet their goal of zero-prototyping for passive safety.

Because of this program, their team can be confident in the accuracy of their simulations, knowing component and full-car behaviors during crashes. This simulation-driven approach saves development time and costs.

THE ROUTE TO SUCCESS

Improved design simulation measures have been the desire for automotive industry leaders for years. Building physical prototypes for testing is time consuming, expensive and comes with its own limitations that influence results.

BMW was able to work around these issues by collaborating with  Dassault Systèmes SIMULIA. They tested new software capabilities and validated features through close correlation between simulation results and real-world test data.

In the end, the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe met all passive safety performance targets and eliminated the need for the soft tooling stage of prototyping, drastically saving production time and costs for the manufacturer.
