Automated and Versatile Surface Finishing for Consistent Looking 3D Printed Parts

The surface finishing solutions from PostProcess are designed for repeatability and consistency. They offer finishing solutions for just about every common additive technology and can achieve consistent Roughness Average (Ra) values across multiple geometries and parts.

There are two technologies commonly used for smoothing parts: Suspended Rotational Force (SRF) and Thermal Atomized Fusillade (TAF). SRF systems combine rotational motion with an abrasive slurry to achieve your required surface finish. TAF systems use jets and a turntable to spray streams of detergent, suspended solids, and compressed air for targeted blast sequences to smooth out your parts. SRF systems are more commonly chosen for thermoplastic surface finishing while TAF systems are more commonly chosen for metal finishing.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What types of 3D printed parts can PostProcess systems finish?
PostProcess machines can accomplish surface finishing for many common 3D printing methods including MJF, SLS, FDM, SLA, CLIP, PolyJet, metals, and more.
What are the cycle times for these machines?
Cycle times depend on the level of smoothness desired. For example, for HP Multi-Jet Fusion parts, we recommend anywhere from 2–6 hours of run time per cycle, depending on your surface finish requirements.
What level of smoothness can be achieved with PostProcess machines?
Over time, RA values as low as 1μm can be achieved with these systems.
Which smoothing technology is best for HP Jet Fusion PA12?
We recommended any machine that uses Suspended Rotational Force such as the RADOR or NITOR for surface finishing of HP parts.
How many parts can I smooth at one time?
For parts using Suspended Rotational Force for smoothing, the general recommendation is that total volume of parts shall not exceed 1/3 of the chamber volume.
