Well, it’s that time of year again – the nights are getting cooler, the days are shorter, the geese are flying south – and the new version of SOLIDWORKS Enterprise PDM is almost here.
So I thought I would share some of my favorite new features in Enterprise PDM 2015.
SolidNetWork License Manager
One of the big changes is in the licensing. No more having to remember to download a license file from the Customer Portal before you upgrade, no more calling us to open a case with SOLIDWORKS to get a new license if you add seats, no more not knowing what type of EPDM license someone is using … Starting with 2015, licensing will be handled by the SolidNetWork License Manager (SNL Manager) – the same method used for networked SOLIDWORKS licenses. If you have standalone SOLIDWORKS seats – no worry – the SNL will be installed when upgrading.
From the SNL Manager, administrators will be able to monitor license usage and allow or restrict access to the vault.
Important: You will need your EPDM serial number to complete the installation and activation so make sure you have it written down. Contact your reseller if you need help determining your number.
Microsoft Office Add-in
This has been around for a while in Beta as a separate download. The add-in is now fully released and included in the installation. It works with Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
The Add-in appears with the other Office ribbons in the software.
To me one of the best benefits of the add-in is that if I have a document open in Word that I hadn’t checked out and start making changes, I can check it out from the add-in and not lose my changes. I can also check in the file through the add-in without having to close it.
From the Microsoft Office add-in you can:
- Check out, check in, and undo check out.
- Get the latest or previous file versions.
- Display and edit Data Card information.
- Change State.
- Access the Search Tool.
- Select in Windows Explorer.
- View file status information:Checked Out by and Workflow information
- Local Version
- Local Revision
The Web2 Client is a web interface that is accessible from most devices that are connected to the internet. It runs on most internet browsers (Chrome, Mozilla FireFox, Internet Explorer) along with mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones.
- Quick searching
- Preview files
- Open SOLIDWORKS files with the eDrawings app.
- See Where Used and Contains information
- State change
- Check out and check in documents, though it is best limited to single files.
NOTE: Web2 will not be included with the 2015 installation media so it requires a separate download. Contact your reseller for help in getting the installation files.
We’ll cover other features next time. See you then!
